Based on animals, inspiration comes from East End dogs, children's books, museums and animals observed at the zoo. I am also very influenced by eighteenth and nineteenth century Staffordshire pots.
All the work is hand built in stoneware, using pinch pots for bodies with limbs and details modelled or built up with coils or slabs. After biscuit firing they are painted with a range of under glaze colours, oxides and glazes and then fired to 1220° centigrade.
Education and beyond
I trained as a sculptor at Exeter College of Art, 1967-1970, and after taking a postgraduate teaching certificate I taught at a number of East London secondary schools. I left teaching after my second child and set up a ceramic workshop in 1984, offering classes to adults and children and producing my own work for shops, galleries and private commissions.
