I make domestic ceramics, including jugs, vases, bowls and tea bowls, in
reduced stoneware. Each piece is initially thrown, then individually
worked and decorated. Stripes, spots and crosshatching help map out
surfaces and reveal aspects of form. The colours are subdued blues, smoky
greys and deep blacks. The resulting pots are unique but share a family
resemblance. The work is characterised by a cohesion between form and
decoration and has a peaceful, self possessed quality.
Education
I am essentially self taught having started making pottery after completing
a degree in chemistry at University College, London in 1970. After working
with a production potter in Yorkshire, I moved to Brixton and set up my
first studio. Three years later I moved my workshop to Hackney where I was
able to build a gas kiln. I have been making and selling pots now for over
twenty five years. I have exhibited and sold work throughout Britain and
in Paris, Tokyo and New York.
